Hobby are regular at Beaulieu heath

Situated half way between Lyndhurst and Beaulieu on the B3056 lies an excellent heathland area beside Beaulieu road station. The forestry commission have provided a free car park (no toilets) and two footpaths lead to Denny wood to the west and Bishop's Dyke in the south. The heathland at shatterford bottom is covered by low lying heather and is not as productive as it once was for dartford warbler. For this species it is better to take the path that runs parallel with the railway line towards shatter ford (two minutes walk) and scan the more mature heather and gorse opposite the railway footbridge.Scanning the skies anywhere around beaulieu road station can produce hobby (right) in late spring and summer as well as buzzards and other raptors.
The small stand of pines can be very productive for crossbill, siskin and hirundines, whilst the surrounding areas should produce tree pipit, woodlark and stonechat.
Denny wood in spring time is a delight with all common woodland birds being joined in spring by warblers and redstart' This is also an excellent place to see lesser spotted woodpecker.

Winter
In winter the heath still attacts many species including flocks of siskin and redpoll, whilst hen harrier can be joined by merlin and possible peregrine. This area has also been a traditional site for great grey shrike with a bird present again winter 08/09.

Right; The forestry commission car park at Beaulieu road station.Well worth scouring the pines for crossbill and siskin before walking accross the heath. Woodlark can also sometimes be found on the eastern side of the road.
