Seabird breeding in Scotland

This year,(2005) Scotland's seabirds-including puffins, guillemots, razorbills, Arctic terns, great skuas and kittiwakes - have suffered another poor breeding season.Sandeel shortages have forced some species to find alternative food sources in the form of white fish, which is less nutritious for chicks.(this happened last year (2004) at the RSPB reserve of Coquet Island in England).
More positively, there have been reports of some breeding successes. At the RSPB's Ailsa Craig reserve in south-west Scotland, puffin numbers are up.Puffins first returned to breed at this reserve in 2001.In 2004, the RSPB counted 35 puffins at the site and 2005 saw 84.Other birds that nest in boulders at the site have also increased in number following the successful eradication of rats.
Did you know...the rescord number of fish carried in a puffin's beak is 62 - 61 sandeeels and a three-bearded rockling.
