Birding Cap de Creus

Birding Cap de Creus

Lying to the far north of the Costa Brava, cap de Creus is the most easterly point of the Iberian peninsula forming part of the Pyrennes that border Spain and France before the cap de Creus peninsula falls into the Mediterranean sea.The area is explorable using the road into the world famous " little fishing village" and stunningly beautiful coastal town of Cadaqués and the Portlligat House-museum - Salvador Dalí’s only fixed abode from 1930, the place in which he normally lived and worked up till 1982.
Before moving to further detail, it is worth pointing out that it is totally pointless trying to birdwatch this area (especially the cap lighthouse on the peninsula) during the summer at weekends as it is virtually impossible to park and walk in any solitude due to the mass of week-end tourists. However, if this is your only opportunity to visit, then we would still recommend it as views of Crag Martin, Pallid Swift, Blue Rock Thrush, Black Wheater (right), Rock Bunting (below) and seabird movements should present few problems. (photos: Black wheatear and Rock bunting -Armando Caldas. Cap de Creus landscapes birdersmarket.com)

birding Habitat consists of rocky outcrops, interspersed with small streams or seasonal torrents, pine, cork oak, vineyards and olive groves. We would recommend at least two days to explore this area in full.
All year;- Cory's shearwater, Manx shearwater, Bonelli's eagle, Peregrine, Thekla lark, Dartford and Sardinian warbler, Blue rock thrush,Rock bunting, Black wheatear, Crag martin.
Summer :-Alpine swift, Pallid swift, Red-rumped swallow, Spectacled, Subalpine, Orphean warbler, Black-eared wheatear.
Winter:-Gannet, Great skua, Alpine Accentor and Wallcreeper.
Species status Information from the Excellent 'Where to watch birds in Catalonia" Josep del Hoyo et al.Click book cover for further details.
