Cape Clear Bird observatory (Republic of Ireland)

Cape Clear Bird observatory (Republic of Ireland)

Cape Clear Bird Observatory was established in 1959 and since then has been manned every Spring and Autumn and, as far as possible, at other times of year as well. Wardening used to be undertaken by birdwatchers holidaying on the island but since 1978, a full time warden has been employed to ensure that the Observatory is manned from March to November. The Observatory is now managed by BirdWatch Ireland, though it still depends on booking fees, sales and donations to operate. The Observatory building, which is situated on the picturesque North Harbour and opposite the berthing place of the mail boat, is a solid stone house with modern facilities for eight people. It was completely refurbished and extended in the summer of 2000.
