Castle Eden Dene

Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve (NNR) is heavily wooded with ash, elm, oak and sycamore, with stands of yew and alder. It is the largest area of natural woodland in North East England. It occupies a deep, steep-sided ravine formed in the Magnesian Limestone and boulder clay of this area of County Durham. The dene vegetation is a survivor of the wild wood which once covered most of Britain.
Perhaps more famous for its rich variety of plant species, it holds many of Britain's woodland bird species with a good population of Jay, and migrant birds in spring and autumn.
