Castlelack Lake
About 8km north-west of Bandon on road to Macroom, Cork.Size: 11.3 hectares
Habitat: A shallow man-made, freshwater lake surrounded by a narrow belt of deciduous woodland.

Birds & wildlife: A good variety can be seen, including Tufted Duck, Wigeon, Coot, Little Grebe and the occasional Scaup. Whooper Swan, Bewick's Swan and Gadwall winter. Rarities have included Ruddy Duck, Ferruginous Duck, Black Tern, Great Northern Diver (unusual inland). All the common woodland species occur in the woods. In summer, Sand Martins perch on a tree in the lake and can be viewed closely from the hide.

Visiting & access: View from adjoining public road or from hide. Access to hide only by arrangement with BirdWatch Ireland (phone John Lynch on 021-874506).
