Situated on the Portuguese side of the Guadiana estuary, at the country's south-east corner. There is an extensive area of saltpans and of claimed land (used for cattle and sheep-grazing) that was formerly saltmarsh.Covering an area of 2,089 hectares, with wet areas of salt marsh, salt pans and creeks and dry areas of schist soils, red clay, arenite and sand, the reserve contains a wide variety of biotopes.It is one of the most spectacular birding areas in Portugal with Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), White Stork (Ciconia ciconia), Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax), Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta), Collared Pratincole (Glareola pratincola), Little Tern (Sterna albifrons),Calandra Lark (Melanocorypha calandra), Greater short-toed lark (Calandrella brachydactyla), Lesser short-toed lark (Calandrella rufescens), Red-necked nightjar (Caprimulgus ruficollis), Rufous Bush Robin (Cercotrichas galactotes), Azure-winged magpie (Cyanopica cyana).pasage birds include Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus), Short-toed eagle (Circaetus gallicus), waders including Marsh sandpiper (Tringa stagnatilis), and both Balearic and Cory's shearwater offshore.Click here for more useful information and a map of the area....
