Common Wood

Common Wood is an area of approximately 250 acres of ancient woodland. As its name implies it was once an area of "common land" to which local residents had rights of access for grazing of animals, collection of firewood etc. In the nineteenth century it passed into private ownership, but has continued to be used for recreation by members of the local community. Recently it has come under threat as it was put up for sale in small lots. This led to fears that it would be damaged by fragmentation, lack of an overall management policy, and the closing of footpaths which, although they have been used for many years, are not official public footpaths. Penn and Tylers Green Residents Society has decided to raise money to purchase the land and thus preserve it in perpetuity for public use.
