Cuskinny Marsh

2km east of Cobh on Great Island in Cork Harbour.Size: 10.1 hectares
Habitat: A small, partly tidal, brackish lagoon. Habitats include lake, marsh, wet woodland and seashore. The sea-wall separating the lake from the sea is leaking; efforts are being made to restore it and return the lake to freshwater. A track is being laid through the woods.

Birds & wildlife: Best know for its scarce gulls (Glaucous, Iceland, Little, Mediterreanean), which occur regularly in winter. Water Rail, Sedge Warbler and Dabchick breed, and a wide range of waders, ducks and woodland birds can be seen. Wood Sandpiper, Marsh Harrier and Grey Phalarope have occurred in autumn. A few hundred Oystercatcher and Curlew winter. Black-throated Diver and Little Auk have been seen offshore.

Visiting & access: View from adjoining public roads only. Three display boards illustrate the birds of the lake, seashore and woodland. Access to woods will be allowed on completion of track.
