East India Dock Basin

East India Dock Basin

Part of the old East India Dock Basin, the site is a tidal brackish dock containing a variety of wetland habitats, with both salt and freshwater flora. Saltmarsh and scrub can be found to the north, while grassy meadows and a small wooded area are also present. This is the only site in the Lee Valley Park where saltmarsh habitat can be found. The site is managed by the London Wildlife Trust.
Spring and Autumn . Flocks of passage terns can be seen over the Thames in either season and sometimes include Little Gulls. Look for Black redstart pictured

An excellent record for London was the sighting of a pair of passage Roseate Terns which visited in spring 2002.Other rarities include honey buzzard, firecrest, barred warbler, nightingale and black tern.

Summer The site annually holds nesting Common Terns, and on average 8 to 10 pairs have been recorded. Little Ringed Plover and Black Redstart are regularly seen. The basin is good for gulls, including regular sightings of Yellow-legged Gull.

Winter Tufted Duck, Mallard and Kingfisher are regular in winter.

Tips - You’ll get easy, clear views from the edges of the dock. Waders such as Redshank can sometimes be seen across the Thames on the tidal mudflats. Peregrines can be seen in the distance perched on the ‘Millennium Dome’ over the river.

Useful Info. The site is open everyday between 10am and 4pm. Unfortunately there are no parking facilities or toilets available, but the site is accessible to wheelchair users.
