Ebernoe Common

Ebernoe Common NNR is a superb example of a Low Weald woodland with a history of traditional use. For centuries it was wood pasture, where commoners would turn out their cattle or pigs to graze and browse on young trees and scrub, beech mast and acorns, or on the grassy meadows in clearings. The Sussex Wildlife Trust purchased 75 hectares in 1980 when much of the woodland was under threat of destruction.
It is a very fine ancient pasture woodland site that is home to many plants and animals. Bats such as barbastelle and Bechstein’s can be found on the common. Hawfinch pictured, all three species of woodpecker and nightingale breed here. Over 400 species of fungi and 375 species of plant occur on the NNR.
