Gibside

Gibside is an estate in the Derwent Valley, between Rowlands Gill, Tyne and Wear. Gibside was previously owned by the Bowes-Lyon family. It is now a National Trust property. The main house on the estate is now a shell, although the property is most famous for its chapel. The stables, walled garden and Banqueting House are also intact.
There is a splendid birding walk which takes in Gibside and the surrounding areas by making use of a former railway line and the star attraction here are the red kites that were introduced some years ago. A visit to Gibside is recommended as part of a birding trip together with other reserves nearby such as the Thornley Woodlands Centre and Far Pastures reserve.
