Harwood forest and Darden lough

Harwood forest is owned by the Forestry commision and is a working forest. That said, it is possible to walk for miles here without encountering any forestry work. For variety, it is probably better to walk around Thrunton woods to the north or Holystone (upper coquetdale). we have personally checked out this forest numerous times for nightjar (mentioned in Where to watch birds in north east england) but have never found any, and we have never found black grouse (over twenty years !). The most interesting areas remain the young two -three year old stands. In summer Whinchat, (above) cuckoo and willow warbler are a delight, and in winter there is regular Hen harrier.
Common buzzard, and Sparrowhawk should be seen, and possibly Goshawk (which have bred in past years). As with most coniferous woodlands, Siskin,Chaffinch,Woodpigeon,Woodcock and Goldcrest breed in good numbers, with the latter three species virtually absent in winter, being replaced with 'winter thrushes' such as Redwing and Fieldfare. A good four wheel drive vehicle will take birders to the very top (north) of the forest, where it meets with the Simonside hills (see that section), Peregrine, Ring ouzel, Golden plover and Dunlin are regular breeders.Best areas, Darden lough and selby's cove.

For breeding Teal try Ravens Lough. Crossbill (right) can be found almost anywhere in Harwood in good cone years.

Note
Harwood is a working forest. Because of tree felling work, it is advisable to contact the forestry commission before any planned visit.Further information is available by clicking here
