High Tatras

The most compact mountains of alpine type in Europe are located on Slovakia’s northern border with Poland.They form the northernmost and highest part of the Western Carpathians. They include the Eastern Tatras (High Tatras and BelanskéTatras), Western Tatras and part of the Podtatransk&basin. The subalpine vegetation consists mainly of Pinus scrub, while the montane zone comprises Picea forest. Forests of Betula, Abies and Acer occur in the BelanskéTatras, and submontane areas consist of grassland, arable land and artificial habitats.Breeding birds include:Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix), Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina), Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Corncrake (Crex crex), Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus), Crested Tit (Parus cristatus), Wallcreeper (Tichodroma muraria),Nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes) Ring Ouzel (Turdus torquatus), Common Redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus), Alpine Accentor (Prunella collaris) and Eurasian Siskin (Carduelis spinus).(Birdife International).
