Hilton Gravel pits SSSI is an area of lakes, reedbed and woodland lying just north of the village of Hilton and is managed by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.There are artificial rafts for breeding common tern and the reedbeds hold breeding reed warbler pictured and sedge warbler. Woodland species include great-spotted, lesser-spotted and green woodpecker, blackcap, whilst water birds include coot , tufted duck, kingfisher and great crested grebe.Raptors include red-kite, common buzzard and sparrowhawk.
The reserve is home to a population of great crested newt and many species of dragolfly.
Access is at all times. Take the A50 junction (Hilton bypass) and park on Willow Pit lane. There are a series of tracks and boardwalks with viewing screens.
