Boronka-Side Protected Area

30km from the Balaton in the watershed area of the Boronka stream.Size: 3,172 hectares
Habitat: The area is covered mostly by forest, and stagnant water marshes without outlets formed between N-S oriented sand-hill rows. 12 ponds are surrounded by forest on 180 acres, which form the core of the protected area. The area has a sub-mediterranean climate, but because of the heterogeneous surface characteristics, sub-mountain flora and fauna elements can be found in some places. Characteristic trees include Austrian oak, oak, pine and locust.
Birds & wildlife: Ponds in the wood contain species found both in the woods and on wetlands (the margin effect). There are many species found in the area including White-tailed Eagle, Honey Buzzard, Black Stork, Ferruginous Duck, Little Bittern, Bittern, Collared Flycatcher, Barred Warbler, Golden Oriole, Nightjar, Black Woodpecker, Bee-eater, Whinchat (above), Baillon's Crake. Animals include Pond Tortoise and Otter. Plants include Mezereon, Siberian Iris, Dog's-tooth Violet, Water Chestnut, Water Violet and Spring Snowflake.
Visiting & access: Open all year round, although there is limited entry. There are 3 observation huts for a capacity of 10 people and a visitor's path. There is full board accommodation available at Somogyfajsz for up to 20 people in basic grade accommodation. German and English is spoken by the reserve staff. You can reach the site by car from Budapest via Balatonboglár, Lengyeltóti, Öreglak and Somogyfajsz. There is a maximum restriction of 40 people to the site. Entry to the reserve is HUF 1,000 per person with a 50% discount for BirdLife members. Other services include horse riding, car hire, cycling, boating, professional guidance and fishing. Other protected areas and places of interest within an hour car journey include medieval monastery ruins, Famous bird paradise and museums. Ornithological tours operate from Nagyberek.

Otter Park Petesmalom
Habitat: The area is flatland, consisting of stagnant water marshes without outlets formed between N-S oriented sand-hill rows. 14 ponds are surrounded by forest, and on some of the lakes there is extensive fishing. Nearby there are large wooded parklands containing birch, oak, pine and locust tree.
Visiting & access: Open all year round, although there is limited entry. There is a watchtower, 3 observation huts with capacity for 10 people and a visitor's path. Full board accommodation available includes camping, the Visitors' Centre and basic grade accommodation at Somogyfajsz. Outdoor stew-pot meals on an open-fire can also be provided. Other services include horse riding, car hire, cycling, boating, professional guidance and fishing. German and English is spoken by the reserve staff. You can reach the site by car from Budapest via Kaposvár, Kadarkút and Mike to Peteshalom. There is a maximum restriction of 40 people to the site. Entry to the reserve is HUF 1,000 per person with a 50% discount for BirdLife International members.
Borsodi Mezoség Tájvédelmi Körzet (Kis Hortobágy) Protected Area)
Southern part of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county.Size: 8,100 hectares
Habitat: Grassy steppe, floodplain meadows, oxbows, gallery-forests.

Birds & wildlife: Great Bustard, Saker, Imperial Eagle, Red-footed Falcon, Roller, Ferruginous Duck, and Great Egret. Other animals include Russian Polecat, Ermine, Marten, and Otter. Plants: Yellow Adonis, Blue Iris, Hog's Fennel.
Visiting & access: Open all year round, although there is limited entry. Accommodation is for 8-15 people with full board and all the modern conveniences. German and English is spoken by the reserve staff. You can reach the site by car (from Budapest via the M3 and 30 to Mezocsát, or via the M3 and 33 through Poroszló, Borsodivánka and Tiszabábolna); by rail (from Budapest via Mezokövesd then bus to Tiszabábolna or via Mezokövesd then bus to Mezocsát or via Nyékládháza and Mezocsát; by bus (from Budapest via Mezokövesd and Mezocsát or via Mezokövesd and Tiszabábolna. Entry to the reserve is DEM 10 (4 postcards included) with 25% discount for BirdLife International members. Other services include horse riding, car hire, cycling, boating, professional guidance, and fishing. A minibus operates for a maximum of 18 people with driver costing DEM 1.2 per km. Other protected areas and places of interest within an hour car journey include a Castle, museums, vine-culture, National Parks and thermal-baths.

Biharugra Fishponds
Biharugra, Békés county.Size: 810 hectares. Habitat: Fishponds
Birds & wildlife: Bittern, Ferruginous Duck, Night Heron, Purple Heron, Little Egret, Great Egret, White Stork, 100,000 Ducks, during migration there are up to 100 White-tailed Eagle.

Visiting & access: Open all year round, although there is limited entry. 3 watchtowers, 1 observation hut. There is hostel accommodation for up to 20 people, with hot and cold water and kitchen facilities; 20-30 people can be accommodated in private houses with half board. You can reach the site by car from Budapest via Kecskemét, Békéscsaba, Sarkad and Biharugra, or via Szolnok, Püspökladány and Biharugra; by rail from Budapest via Gyula then bus to Biharugra. There is a restriction of a maximum of 10 people per group. There is no charge for entry, and BirdLife members receive a 20% discount on hostel accommodation. Other services include horse riding, car hire, cycling, boating, professional guidance, fishing, and horse carriage-rides. Other protected areas and places of interest within an hour car journey include a Historical Monument, museums, castle theatre in the summer, Local architectural remains and tours to Transylvania.
