Identification of Dotterel Charadrius morinellus

Identification of Dotterel Charadrius morinellus

Length approximately 22cm.
Adults in summer plumage are unmistakable, with the female bird brighter in colour than the male. The white 'eye stripe' or supercilium is a striking feature in all plumages and runs to the rear of the head. A white chest band is also visible above the chestnut breast. A short black bill and yellowish-green legs (which do not project in flight) are also diagnostic. Upperparts dark greyish with a purple hint in good light with feathers showing distinct pale edges.Shows no wing bar in flight.
In winter all plumages become greyer with the chestnut colour much less defined, but the white breast line still visible.
A migratory member of the plover family, Dotterels are extremely approachable (almost tame) at their breeding grounds and are often seen in small parties or 'trips' during migration.
