Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus L65-78CM

Adult Summer
The largest of the Stercorarius Skuas (slightly smaller than a Herring gull Larus argentatus). On migration, flight is direct unlike gulls (but generally slower than Arctic Skua) and in well-fed examples, shows a 'bulging belly' which hangs towards the front of the bird. The key to identification is the Pomarine Skua's rounded central tail feathers which form a distinctive 'blob'. The larger Pomarine Skua's flight can be similar to the Great Skua but it never shows the striking white flashes to the upper wings and remember the rounded tail. Most birds are light phased with the rarer dark phased birds outnumbered by 9:1.
