Isle of Portland

The 'island' of Portland is a superb and exciting birding location and is one of the best known in Britain. It extends,at its southern-most end, seven miles into the English Channel and is linked to the mainland by Chesil Beach. The 'bill's' geographical position makes it a magnificent area for birdwatching, with disused quarry workings, large areas of scrub and limestone cliffs. It is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is also a Special Area of Conservation candidate.
Spring and autumn are probably the best times to experience Portland, when migration is in full swing, but if you are not into 'twitching' you will probably want to avoid it, especially at week-ends when it can be positively crowded.
Wheatears and Chiff-chaff's arrive in early March and the 'Bill' also becomes a good sea-watching venue with movements of divers, auks, Fulmar and Gannet, Common Scoter and Kittiwake, April-May brings passing terns, skua and shearwaters, with large 'falls' of small passerines returning from warmer climes, and they inevitably include rarities.
On the West cliffs, a few pairs of Fulmar and Kittiwake breed, and are joined by Guillemots and Razorbills, with several pairs of Puffin.
Autumn migration on the 'Bill' is legendary with Melodious Warbler a speciality, but the list of rare birds for portland is endless. To read further information, we suggest clicking the observatory link below, which has an excellent sightings section.
