Leighton Moss RSPB reserve
The Arnside and Silverdale peninsula lies just south of the Lake District and is an area of outstanding natural beauty, famous for its scenic area of woodlands, marshes and views across the expanse of Morecambe Bay.
At its heart lies Leighton Moss, the largest remaining reedbed in north-west England. The reserve is well-known for its special birds: breeding bitterns, bearded tits, marsh harriers and avocets. an RSPB reserve of shallow meres, reedbeds and saltmarsh, famous for its rare, yet accessible, birds and other wildlife.
Explore the site using the network of short and long trails, with observation hides that provide close views of deer, flocks of ducks and those special reedbed birds, the bittern, bearded tit and marsh harrier.
There are guided walks and events for all interests, including wader watches, art courses, pond dipping for families and introductory birdwatching sessions.
The Visitor Centre is housed in a typical local farm building and offers a substantial gift shop, well stocked with books and optics, and a tearoom selling homemade cakes and light lunches all year round.
A separate entrance to the reserve enables you to access two observation hides overlooking the expanse of Morecambe Bay itself, with its huge flocks of wintering waders and wildfowl.
