Low Newton

Newton pool's breeding birds are typical of other fresh water areas along the Northumberland coast with little grebe, mallard, mute swan, moorhen, coot, black-headed gull, reed bunting and sedge warbler. However as is typical of this type of location, it is during migration periods that the reserve can produce the spectacular and interesting. The pool has a record for both grey and wilson's phalaropes present at the same time as well as sightings of bittern and purple heron. The isolated stands of trees and shrubs are well worth checking for migrating warblers including yellow-browed , barred and pallas's.Willow warbler and chiff-chaff are common. The surrounding fields and scrub areas hold wheatear, yellowhammer, kestrel, sparrowhawk, stonechat and occasionally yellow wagtail. In winter a walk to newton point will provide excellent views over the bay - and sea duck, divers and grebes are usual.Scan the various 'carrs' including the delightfully named 'Jenny Bell's Carr for purple sandpiper and oystercatcher.
By parking at the car park (no access to Low Newton village) it is possible to walk to the point by taking the path next to the green corrugated church. This path winds along the coast and passes the village.By keeping to the beach, one can return via Newton pool and perhaps sample the delights of the Ship Inn on the way back. Excellent year round birdwatching and always something of interest.
