Lower Bug River Valley

Know as the 'Small Biebrza' the Lower Bug river is one of the most important bird habitats in Poland. The best birding area lies between Cupel and Barcice, before the river meets the Narew with both rivers converging on the Zegrze Reservoir. The Bug forms part of the border with neighbouring Ukraine and is a protected habitat under the Nature 2000 convention.
The Lower Bug valley is one of the major migration routes in Poland. As with the Biebrza Marshes it is subject to intense floods every spring and attracts thousands of swans, geese, wildfowl, waders and cranes.
Many species breed in the marshy areas including Black Tern and White-winged Black Tern , Great Reed Warbler, Bluethroat pictured, Thrush Nightingale, both Great Bittern and Little Bittern, Great Snipe, Little Crake,Red-necked Grebe, Pendulline Tit, Ruff, Black Stork, Eagle Owl, Osprey, White-tailed and Lesser Spotted Eagle, Montagu's Harrier.
In the woods, scrubland and drier areas, Red-backed Shrike, Stone Curlew, Ortolan Bunting, European Nightjar, Woodlark, Red-footed Falcon, Black Kite and Roller can be found.
