Mechelen, Bonheiden, region of Flanders

Size: 89 hectares

Habitat: An area of flat grasslands along the river Dijle with small swamps, channels and two large artificial lakes.

Birds & wildlife: Important wintering site for waterfowl. Spotted Crake, Water Rail, Sedge Warbler, Grasshopper Warbler and Bluethroat pictured breed in the reserve.

Visiting & access: The visitor centre (Oude Muizenhoekstraat 5, Muizen-Mechelen) is opened on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday in the summer period, and Sunday during the winter period. The reserve is only accessible on marked trails, but the birds are easy to observe from a tower, observation hide and dikes.
