The Reserve

The Reserve

Lying on the Suffolk coast between Dunwich in the north and the Sizewell nuclear power station to the south, Minsmere is one of the RSPB's finest reserves. Covering an area of around 2500 acres, it is a delight at any time of the year, but especially April-May when it is possible to see 100 species in a day.Much of the credit for Minsmere's early success can be put down to one man, Herbert Axell who was the reserves warden for seventeen years, and responsible for creating the many different habitats including the world famous 'Scrape', a large brackish lagoon. It was here in 1947 that Avocet returned to breed, followed by Marsh Harrier in 1955 and Bearded tit recovered from the disasterous winter of 1947 to reach forty pairs in 1959.
The reserve's star attractions are Bittern, Minsmere holds a sizeable proportion of the UK population. Visit in spring to hear them ‘booming’ or summer to watch the parents making feeding flights. Bittern Hide and Island Mere Hide offer a great chance of a sighting.Avocets can be seen on the famous 'scrape' and Bearded tits can usually be seen from the Island mere or 'Bittern' hides. The extensive reedbeds play host to several breeding marsh harriers. The elevated Island Mere and Bittern Hides will reward you with excellent views. They can now be seen here throughout the year. BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Lesley Dolphin visits the reserve to hear about the work that goes on behind the scenes. To hear this article click here (Real Player required.Free from BBC web site).

Where to watch Birds in East Anglia
East Anglia is one of the best birding regions in England. With its extensive areas of nationally scarce habitat such as the fens, reedbeds, undisturbed beaches and Breckland heath, it can be the only place to see several of England's most exciting birds. This is a guide to where to go in East Anglia to see many different species. It contains site accounts, plans, maps, lists of birds in the region and advice on planning birdwatching trips. This fourth edition is revised and updated.
