Naardermeer

The first nature reserve in the Netherlands (1905) .It is a complex of shallow freshwater lakes, pools and canals (former peat-workings), fens, reedbeds and swamp-forest, surrounded by improved grassland which is being converted to wet meadows and marshland. The site is located alongside the Amsterdam to Bussum railway.It is an important breeding site for Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) and Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) pictured and other reed birds including Reed warbler, Savi's warbler and Bearded tit.
