The park was established in 1949 with a special bill, calling for the "protection of the exceptional natural beauty and scientifically and historically important forest around Mavrovo valley.Situated in the southwestern part of the Balkans, near Macedonia's border with Albania and Yugoslavia. It lies within a vast mountain system that extends along the western edge of peninsula, transcending the borders of several countries.Mavrovo National Park is home to more than 140 species of birds, as well as about 45 species of other vertebrates; many of them are thereatened or endangered in other parts of Europe.
Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus), Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina), Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca) , Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus), Lanner falcon (Falco biarmicus), Eurasian Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo).
