North Bull Island Oileán an Tairbh is an extensive area of inter-tidal mudflats, two golf courses and dunes , formed after the creation of the Great South Wall which was completed in 1730.The island is about 5 km long and 800 m wide, and
a Special Protection Area (SPA) of international importance for wildfowl such as Light-bellied Brent Goose. It was also Ireland's first National Bird Sanctuary, designated in 1931
The island has recorded several rarities in recent years particularly gulls, but also Pectoral Sandpiper and Wilson's phalarope, but is generally best know for wintering waders such as Knot, Curlew pictured by Neil Fifer, Dunlin, both Black-tailed and Bar-tailed godwit, Redshank, Oystercatcher, Grey and Golden plover and Turnstone.
