Situated north east of Tollesbury, on the B1023....Old Hall Marshes are part of the Blackwater Estuary RSPB reserve. The site is part of the Blackwater Flats and Marshes, and is also a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar convention.
A large area of grazing marsh, intertidal mudflats and saltmarsh, the largest in Essex and one of the largest in eastern England, the reedbed area is the largest in Essex. Water levels are controlled for the benefit of waders and wildfowl.
In Winter, Old Hall Marshes supports around 2% of the World Population of Dark-bellied Brent Geese joined by important numbers of Curlew, Dunlin (pictured) , Grey Plover,Ringed Plover, Shelduck, Teal, Wigeon and Goldeneye. Winter also brings Hen Harrier and Merlin.
