The ReserveThe Reserve
Lying next to the River Great Ouse, Paxton Pits is a superb mosaic of wildlife habitats covering 75 hectares (185 acres) of lakes, riverside, meadow, reed bed, scrub and woodland.Paxton pits has the largest concentration of breeding Nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos) in Cambridgeshire, with twenty-six singing males in 2005.Up to 160 species are recorded each year, with around 70 species breeding including cormorant and kingfisher.There are 10km of nature trails and two hides, the Hayden hide (pictured left) and the kingfisher hide. The reserve is situated just off the A1, north of St Neots.

The reserve is open to visitors at all times and the visitor centre at weekends and most other busy times (telephone 01480 406795). The centre is staffed by volunteers and has toilet facilities for the disabled.There are two marked trails, The Heron Trail (3.2KM or two miles) and The Meadow Trail (2.4KM or 1 1/2 miles).
