Bocquer Valley

Birding in the Pollensa area

For birdwatchers wishing to visit Mallorca, Puerto Pollensa makes the perfect base as it is close to the Albufuera marsh, the mountains in the north of the island and the seacliffs of Formentor. There are also several excellent birdwatching spots within walking distance of the town, including La Gola reserve, reached via Passeig Saralegui ,the Boquer valley which is great for migrants, and even the beach will normally produce Audoin's Gull and Kentish plover. A walk around Puerto Pollensa during the spring migration season (especially mid-April to mid-May) will be a delight with migrant birds (redstart, warblers and birds of prey) everywhere.

The small but interesting La Gola Reserve is located in the centre of Puerto Pollensa just off the sea front adjacent to the bridge that crosses the small river here, and makes for an excellent early morning pre-breakfast walk. The reserve consists of saline open water and woodland scrub and there is a walking track that runs around it.Anything can turn up here, but the visitor should find hoopoe, sardinian warbler pictured, blue-headed wagtail, purple heron, night heron, stonechat, crossbill, woodchat shrike and possible osprey.

The Bocquer Valley

The Bocquer Valley

Easily reached on foot from Puerto Pollensa, the Bocquer valley is one of the most famous of all European birding sites. During spring migration it is a 'must see'. The gentle climb through the tree lined Pollensa streets produces hoopoe, scops owl, firecrest and migrants such as flycatchers and redstart. The Avenue de Bocchoris leads to the Ma-2200 and at this point things get really interesting ornithologically speaking.Scan the farmland for wryneck, cirl bunting, stone curlew, thekla lark, and the skies for crag martin, pallid swift, and passing osprey. Once in the valley the rocks should be scanned for blue rock thrush pictured and listen for sardinian warbler whilst scanning the skies here for booted eagle and vultures.
