Radipole Lake and Lodmoor RSPB reserves

Radipole lake was once the estuary of the River Wey, that ceased to exist when the westham bridge was built in the 1920's.The lake is now freshwater and lies in the centre of Weymouth. It is managed by the RSPB who took over the reserve in 1975. The thatched visitor centre gives comfortable panoramic views of the reserve and a series of good footpaths offers access to wheelchair users. It is a reserve with an excellent reputation for unusual gull's, including Mediterranean, ring-billed, Glaucous and Iceland and a spectacular range of rare passage migrants.
Bearded tits (right) and Cetti's warblers (one of the largest colonies in Britain) breed and can be seen all year. There is open water,a large expanse of reedbed, flood meadows and bushes that attract many migrants.More than fifty species breed at Radipole including a very large population of Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus and Cetti‘s Warbler Cettia cetti,Bearded Tit Panurus biarmicus and Nightingale Luscinia megarhyncos. The reedbeds support important pre-migration roosts of Sand Martin Riparia riparia, House Martin Delichon urbica, Swallow Hirundo rustica and Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava. An excellent reserve with an almost endless list of rarities.A detailed look at the reserve can be found by reading Where to watch birds in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (ordering details below)
