Before becoming an ornithological reserve, Palermo, since the turn of the 20th century was a farm managed by a Scottish family. Today it is the first farm in Southern Chile to be managed as a wildlife sanctuary focused towards ecotourism, specifically Birdwatching.

Along the coast and fertile river valleys, you may spot Peruvian Diving-petrels, Humboldt penguins, Tamarugo Conebills, Chilean Woodstars, and Piedcrested Tit-tyrants, all endemic to Chile and southern Peru. Altiplano species include Giant Coots, James, Andean, and Chilean Flamingos, Diademed Sandpiper-Plovers, Puna Plovers, Puna Ibises, and over a hundred other migratory and resident species.
