Retezat National Park

A mountainous area covering 54,400 ha in the south-eastern Carpathians ,Retezat National Park was created in 1935. The first park in Romania set up to preserve the beauty of the mountains and to protect rare and endemic plants. Altitude ranges from 794m to 2509m at the highest peak, with galcial lakes, mountain streams, ravines and gorges. Fagus and Abies forests predominate with dwarf Pinus scrub at the treeline and alpine pastures above that.
Birds include Lesser spotted eagle, Golden eagle, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Pygmy Owl, Ural Owl, wallcreeper,and Alpine Accentor.The wooded areas have Grey-headed, Black, Middle-spotted, White-backed and Three-toed woodpeckers and also Crested Tit, Capercaillie, Hazel Grouse, Hawfinch and Red-brested Flycatcher.
