Riserva Naturale Regionale Biviere di Gela

The reserve is located near the village of Gela on the southern coast of Sicily, facing the Sicilian strait between Sicily and Tunisia.Size: 330 hectares
Habitat: The reserve is a coastal freshwater lake invaded by diverse wetland vegetation including a number of habitats which range from deep open water to shallow muddy water, sand and mud banks, reed beds and patches of floating aquatic vegetation.

Birds & wildlife: The reserve is a very important stop-over site for migratory waterfowl, including most of the European species of ducks, several species of Herons, Terns, Waders and Rails. The reed beds host a rich community of Reed and a Great Reed Warblers, Penduline Tits pictured ,and diversified community of rails. Highlights during the migration are Spoonbills, Glossy Ibis, Purple Heron, Squacco Heron and, at times, Cranes and White and Black Stork.

Visiting & access: The reserve is open everyday all year round, up until 17.30. Groups should book in advance. Phone: 0933-926051
