River Danube flood-plain

The 150-km-long and up to 4-km-wide Danube flood-plain lies adjacent to the Hungarian border. The IBA covers the inundation zone of the river, numerous backwaters, oxbow lakes and islets, water-fringe vegetation, reedbed (Phragmites) and flood-plain forest (mainly Populus, Fraxinus, Salix and Ulmus).An important site for breeding species of flood-plain forests and other riverine habitats, and as a stop-over site for migrating waterbirds - holding more than 20,000 individuals on a regular basis.Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus) and Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) also breed.
