Rutland Water Osprey Project

Rutland Water Osprey Project

Ospreys first bred in Rutland in 2001 when one healthy chick was raised. The male bird, 03(97), had built a nest in the top of a dying oak tree, away from the reservoir on private land. Since then the same male has returned and bred there every year.
In 2003 there was a second successful nest nearby but that nest was not occupied subsequently. in 2004, two translocated Ospreys were discovered breeding in Wales.
Each year there have been several non-breeding males who have established territories and built nests.
