Sanda Island

Sanda (Scottish Gaelic: Sandaigh) is a small privately owned island in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, off the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula. The home to breeding manx shearwater and storm petrel pictured. The island is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its importance for both migrating and breeding birds and the Sanda Bird Observatory was the first bird observatory to be set up on the west coast of Scotland. Manx shearwater breed on the north side of the island and storm petrel use the south in the vascinity of the spectacular lighthouse. The island is also home to common breeding waders such as ringed plover and oystercatcher, gulls such as common and lesser black-backed, breeding peregrine and regular visiting golden eagle from nearby Kintyre and the isle of Arran. We visited Sanda back in 2006 but since then its ownership has changed hands. Check the web for visiting instructions as of 2016 it has been privately owned.
