The North Gare

Lying 1 mile from the coastal town of Seaton Carew, Seaton Common, Seaton sands and the North Gare are accessed via a tarmac track known as the North Gare Road, east of the A178.A car park leads accross a golf course to Seaton sands. The common is a series of small ponds and rough grassland lying to the east of dunes and the North sea, with the pier forming the northern point of the Tees Estuary. This area is of National importance for wintering waders and regular merlin, peregrine, twite and snow bunting and occassional shore lark, with short-eared owl also present.
It is also a migration 'hot spot' in Spring and Autumn with Northern Wheatear, Whinchat, Ring Ouzel, Flycatchers, common and rarer warblers including both Yellow-browed and Barred Warbler. Stonechat can be seen all year along with meadow pipit, skylark and reed bunting.

From here there are numerous choices of birding locations. The first obvious stopping point is the Cowpen marsh area and Greatham Creek to the south using the A178. There is a splendid view of the creek from the road bridge. (beware of parking on this verge as the kerb is much higher than it looks and your vehicle is likely to 'bottom'). It is best to park at the small car park on the right hand side of the road and walk back along the 'old road' away from the traffic. From here it is possible to walk along the creek to Seal Sands.
