21 Jan: During the winter bird count a flock of 10 Swallows was observed flying north. A total of 4 Firecrests were recorded, with 3 on the Upper Rock and 1 in the gardens, and a Dartford Warbler was recorded on Windmill Hill, the second of the year.

19-20 Jan: 54 Siskins were trapped and ringed in the Alameda Botanic Gardens. Only 30 Siskins had been ringed previously in the last 14 years.

18 Jan: An Eagle Owl was seen at first light flying along the cliffs on the east side of the Rock. Up to 75 Siskins regularly seen in the Botanic Gardens.

17 Jan: A Long-legged Buzzard was seen over Jews' Gate.

12 Jan: A Booted Eagle was observed over the crest of the Rock. Tawny Owls were heard in the Botanic Gardens. At least forty Siskins were feeding in a Ficus tree in the same locality earlier in the day.

9 Jan: A female Sparrowhawk and a Firecrest were among birds seen in the Upper Rock.

7 Jan: A male Sparrowhawk was seen soaring over the Botanic Gardens.

6 Jan: The Grey Heron is now a daily visitor to the Botanic Gardens, flying in from the south low among the trees and arriving at the pond in the Open Air Theatre soon after first light . After being disturbed it invariably heads north, often mobbed by Yellow-legged Gulls. A female Sparrowhawk was seen at Anglian Way.

4 Jan: The wintering Short-toed Eagle was seen over the Botanic Gardens. Two Great Cormorants flew south over the South Mole. An early Dartford Warbler was seen at Windmill Hill.

3 Jan: A male Spanish Sparrow was observed perched on Aloes at Europa Point.
