Stithians reservoir

Stithians Dam was completed in 1964 to create a 270-acre (1.1 km2) reservoir to the west of the village, which supplies water to a large part of the west of Cornwall. It is one of the best birdwatching sites in Cornwall. It provides a shallow lake with marshy edges for breeding little grebe, coot and moorhen. Large flocks of Teal and Wigeon (at least 100 of each) can often be seen feeding here, as can smaller numbers of Tufted Duck, Pochard, Mallard, Gadwall and Goldeneye.

Rare sightings are commonplace , especially during winter and passage periods, and include Crag Martin (Britain's first), Black Duck, Black Kite, Caspian Tern, Wilson's Phalarope and, in April 2009, the second ever sighting of a Golden Eagle in Cornwall (the first occurred more that 200 years ago!) pasage waders include Greenshank, Little Stint and Curlew Sandpiper, and regular American waders such as Pectoral sandpiper and american golden plover, while Goosander can occur in winter.

The lake is easily accessible by car and there are hides at both ends (keys are available from CBPS) and a dam on the east side that offers excellent viewing. A footpath follows the perimeter of the lake and there are car parks at the dam and at the Golden Lion pub.
