Stroan Loch and Raiders Road Forest Drive

Ten miles of two way forest road winding along the banks of the Black Water of Dee between the Bennan and Clatteringshaws. For most of its length the Drive follows the course of an old drove road featured in "The Raiders" a romance by Samuel Rutherford Crockett.

In the surrounding forest red and roe deer graze on short vegetation whilst overhead buzzards, sparrowhawk, red kite and raven can be seen with crossbills and siskins (pictured) feeding on tree cones. You may even catch sight of the elusive pine martin.

In summer the loch may be visited by Osprey. Also look out for Redstart and listen for the piping call of Common Sandpiper as they bob up and down on the lochside rocks (call sound below).
