Summer Leys

Located at Wollaston in the Upper Nene Valley, Northamptonshire. A wonderful reserve, created from former gravel pits, covering just under 50 hectares (120 acres), Summer Leys is primarily wetland, with some grassland and woodland habitats, and hedges. The grassland is managed by the use of grazing cattle and rare-breed sheep, supported by a grant from the SITA Trust
The reserve and neighbouring gravel pits, collectively the Upper Nene Valley Gravel Pits, are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance due to their importance for wintering wildfowl

Breeding bird species incude oystercatcher,black-headed gull, common tern, little ringed plover pictured, ringed plover and tree sparrow. The scrapes and shallow areas attract migrating waders such as ruff, whimbrel, greenshank and green sandpiper. In summer hobby are attracted by the sixteen species of dragonflies and damselflies that have been recorded, including the uncommon hairy dragonlfly.
Winter brings large numbers and a wide variety of wildfowl, including teal, wigeon, shoveler, pochard and tufted duck. They are joined by large numbers of golden plover, sometimes over a thousand, which roost on the islands and fly out to nearby fields to feed.
