The Bardaca wetlands

The Bardaca wetlands are a series of 11 lakes situated between the rivers Vrbas and Sava, northeast of Banja Luka near the town of Srbac.They are the second biggest wetland area in Bosnia and Herzegovina and it is the biggest wetland in Danube River Basin.
The globally threatened Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca and Corncrake Crex crex breed at the site. Other breeding species include Night Heron, Nycticorax nycticorax, Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides pictured, Little Egret Egretta garzetta,Purple Heron Ardea purpurea, Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus, Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia, Common Tern Sterna hirundo (30+ pairs), and Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybridus (40+ pairs). White Stork Ciconia ciconia and the globally near-threatened White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla feed, and possibly breed, at the site. The area is also very important for passage migrants.
