The Danube Auen National Park

"The lower Austrian Danube floodplains are a world of their own. Those who only know the forests, the mountains and the plains of this land do not realize that close to the city a rather solitary and distinctive wilderness exists."- Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, 1888

The Danube-Auen National Park is protecting one of the last large unbuilt floodplain areas (Au) in Europe. Here the dynamics of the flowing stream are still active. The rise and fall of the water levels define life rhythms in the floodplain. The river shaped this landscape with its floods and still nurtures today a large diversity of plants and animals. In the National Park nature can develop free from economic restrictions.

Riverine forests on the Danube east of Vienna;- The IBA is the only remaining large riverine forest on a free flowing stretch of the Danube in Austria. Close to the river Salix and Populus dominate, whilst in other areas the forest is dominated by Fraxinus, Quercus and Ulmus. Artificial Populus plantations have replaced the natural forest in many places. The forest is interspersed with oxbow lakes, fringed by reedbeds (Phragmites).
Birds;-Resident Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius), breeding European Honey-buzzard (Pernis apivorus), Black Kite (Milvus migrans), Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis).
