The Farr Road

A narrow single track road winds its way up from the Findhorn valley towards the small hamlet of Farr on the B851. This road has become a favourite of birdwatchers and birding tour operators taking in a circuit that includes the RSPB reserve of Loch Ruthven (Slavonian grebes).
It is worthwhile taking this route slowly, stopping when possible to survey the surrounding skies. Common buzzard will be the most visible raptor on this route, but it is also an excellent location for golden eagle, hen harrier and the dashing merlin pictured.
Check the moorland for grouse and the scree areas for ring ouzel.
