Washington Wetland Centre is set in 45 hectares of land on the banks of the river Wear. It is home to a large collection of exotics, although the majority of the reserve is dedicated to wild birds. There are a number of interesting habitats including the 'Wader Lake' with hides overlooking breeding and feeding terns and wading birds, such as Common Tern, lapwing and Redshank, it is also home to the largest nesting colony of Grey Herons in the North East and the most northerly hatching of Avocet chicks ever recorded (July 2006).A woodland feeding centre with hide. Regular visitors include Great-spotted Woodpecker and Bullfinch, which are at their busiest from November to February. The reedbed pool with breeding reed warbler, Sandpiper pool ,excellent for waders, whilst other areas attract wildfowl, kingfisher, common sandpiper and grey wagtail. The river wear is also of interest.
The Sir Peter Scott visitor centre has a shop and cafe that overlook the reserve.
