Westleton Heath NNR

Westleton Heath is located in an area known as the Sandlings. The site is a National Nature Reserve (NNR) and is a large, open expanse that is predominantly heather with, in the north of the site, a subtle rise in the landscape.

The heather provides glorious colour and is also an important source of nectar to butterflies, spiders and rare beetles, and roosts for a variety of birds such as Dartford Warblers. Although the Dunwich Road splits the site, once immersed in the splendour and peace of any part of this landscape it is easy to imagine standing in the mediaeval Sandlings that once strectched for miles along this part of the Suffolk coast.

The site is approximately 1 mile east of Westleton village on the road to Dunwich and can be reached using public rights of way. The long distance path, The Sandlings Walk, runs to the north of the site.Birds of open heath and light scrub are well represented here and include tree pipit, dartford warbler, stonechat (pictured) and nightjar; while the woodlands support nightingale and woodcock.

Westleton Heath National Nature Reserve is 0.5 miles (1 km) north east of the village of Westleton. The heath is crossed by a minor road from Westleton to the coastal village of Dunwich, 2 miles (3 km) to the east. The famous Minsmere RSPB reserve lies immediately to the east of the village.
