Former sand and gravel workings situated in the Trent valley have been transformed in to a fabulous wildlife reserve. Managed by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, the reserve is an outstanding array of wetland habitats, from open water to reed bed, shingle and grass islands and sand banks which have breeding sand martin.Other breeding birds include common tern, black-headed gull, kingfisher, reed and sedge warbler, great-crested and little grebe.
In winter the reserve holds large numbers of wintering wildfowl and the occasional bittern.
Waders are also frequent passage visitors including greenshank, little stint, common sandpiper, black tailed godwit, green sandpiper and dunlin.
