Winterbourne Downs

This RSPB reserve forms an important link between the extensive grasslands of Salisbury Plain and Porton Down. These grasslands are managed to provide a safe haven for breeding stone-curlews pictured, a bird typical of this area but which is under threat.
The reserve is still a working farm, and some of the land is being kept in arable production for the benefit of farmland birds. From the nature trail in the spring you may see skylarks, lapwings, yellowhammers, linnets and grey partridges. In winter, large flocks of finches and buntings gather to feed on the wild bird seed mixes.
As well as a small car park, there are bicycle racks and a picnic table where you can enjoy stunning panoramic views across the reserve. The car park is open all year round except for the summer solstice. Please note there is a 2 m height restriction bar.
