Wood of Cree

The largest stand of ancient woodland in southern Scotland and managed as a reserve by the RSPB.Excellent for a range of woodland migrant birds and a variety of bat species including the rare Leisler's bat.
In spring Wood of Cree is a carpet of bluebells and wild flowers and is best visited early morning in May. Many of the migrants attracted here will be in full voice including wood warbler, pied flycatcher (pictured) and redstart.They join resident common buzzard, willow tit and great spotted woodpecker. There is a viewing platform overlooking the river near the car park. Parking is free (at the time of writing) donations welcome.
